When the Supreme Court decided to send Shahar Mizrahi to jail, there was public criticism and unrest. Essentially, Mizrahi shot Mahmoud Ganaim after a lengthy car chase with him. Mizrahi has said he opened fire purely in self-defense, because he believed Mahmoud Ganaim was trying to run him over. Both the trial and the Supreme Court found him guilty and convicted him of manslaughter.
MK Danny Danon is one of the biggest opponents of the incarceration of this policeman, because he believes that while on duty, policemen and women must be protected by Israeli law.
Danon voted for a new piece of legislation that will bar the indictment of policemen who open fire because they think their life is in danger from someone who assaulted them. This proposed legislation says that any policeman or security guard who feels he has been pushed to attack is released from liability if a criminal act is committed. Also, if that policeman is preventing the escape of a suspected criminal, they are also released from blame. Of course, the legislation will only apply to officers on duty, and when the circumstances actually meet these conditions.
