Deputy Speaker Danon Unveils 'Hour Glass' Counting Down to End of Settlement Freeze

MR. PRIME MINISTER: THE CLOCK IS TICKING.

Deputy Knesset Speaker Danny Danon (Likud) unveiled a 'timely' campaign to remind Prime Minister Netanyahu of his commitment to end the freeze on building settlements in Judea and Samaria.

A virtual hour glass is counting down the weeks, days, hours and minutes until September 26, 2010 –concluding date for the ten month freeze. The clock can be downloaded to computer desktops and mobile phones to serves as a screen saver and will soon appear on popular online news sites.

"This is a reminder to Prime Minister Netanyahu that we are counting down the days and hours until the end of this mistaken building freeze," said Deputy Speaker Danon. "The Prime Minister promised the members of the Likud Party that on the 26th of September we will resume building in these important communities. We are eagerly awaiting that day. We know that the American administration will begin pressuring the Prime Minister in the beginning of May to extend the freeze and we hope to counter this effort by helping him remain firm in his commitment to the residents of Judea and Samaria and to the principle of our history and his movement."

Ministers Debate Ousting Anti-Israel MKs

The ministerial committee for legislation will debate the proposed "Zouabi bill," stipulating that MKs who actively support armed struggle against Israel will be ousted from the Knesset.

The bill is named for freshman Arab MK Hanin Zouabi, a woman who was aboard the Turkish Marmarsi ship together with Hamas-supporting IHH terrorists in its attempt to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza. Her anti-Israel stance has long been well-known and documented, but her participation in the flotilla and her subsequent attempt to speak in the Knesset while MKs of various factions shouted her down and attempted to remove her have cemented her position as Israel's #1 public enemy.

The bill now under consideration was submitted by Likud MK Danny Danon. It states that an incumbent Knesset Member who takes part in supporting an enemy's armed struggle against the State of Israel must be removed from the Knesset.

Israeli Legislator Danon Pushes Netanyahu to Restart West Bank Building

Danny Danon, a Likud Party lawmaker and head of its international support arm, is pushing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make good on his promise to let West Bank settlement construction resume in September.

While a temporary ban declared by Netanyahu in November expires Sept. 26, Danon said today he will mobilize supporters inside Israel and out so the prime minister doesn't extend the moratorium as a gesture to the Palestinians and President Barack Obama, who is trying to broker Middle East peace talks.

"That's going to be D-Day in Judea and Samaria," Danon, who put a virtual hourglass on his website ticking off the minutes to Sept. 26, said in an interview in Jerusalem, using the biblical terms for the West Bank. "There will be an enormous amount of pressure coming from the White House" and settlement opponents within Israel "to convince him the right thing to do is to extend the freeze."

The Ministerial Committee on Legislative Affairs on Sunday approved a bill aimed at aggravating the conditions of Hamas prisoners jailed in Israel in a bid to pressure the Palestinian organization to advance the talks for kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit's release.

Ynet reported several weeks ago that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu removed his objection to the bill, after working to postpone a discussion on the proposal last summer in light of security element's objection.

The bill will now be brought to the Knesset for a preliminary reading with the coalition's support. The exact changes in the prisoners' conditions will be determined later on.

The bill, initiated by Knesset Members Danny Danon and Yariv Levin (Likud), addresses prisoners that were convicted for being members in a terrorist organization "that holds an Israeli citizen or resident in conditions of imprisonment, without allowing him to receive visitors."

'Free Shalit' Takes New Approach

The campaign to free kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit has taken on a new angle as several organizations band together to pressure Hamas. The latest campaign involves stripping terrorist prisoners of their privileges in an attempt to convince Hamas that time is not on its side.

Previous Shalit rallies have generally focused on raising awareness of the young Israeli's plight, instead of promoting a specific strategy to win his safe return.

Organizations involved in the new campaign have kicked off an educational initiative in Tel Aviv. They plan to explain their view to the general public, in hopes of increasing pressure on the government to enact their proposal.

A similar initiative is being promoted in the Knesset, where MK Danny Danon (Likud) is pushing a bill that would curtail the right of terrorist prisoners to receive visits in jail until Shalit is freed.
